honoring my mama

This mama thing has a hold of me.  I adore being a mama.  It just feels right, you know?

So, it wouldn't be right to celebrate this Mother's Day without paying tribute to my mama.  A Proverbs 31 woman, if ever there was one.

"A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.  She brings him good,
 not harm, all the days of her life."
Proverbs 31: 10-12

Yep, I'd say Jimmy Griggs definitely found his 'good egg' when he married Jacqueline Hewitt all those years ago.  Through thick and thin, their marriage has been a model to those around them.  She is a wife of noble character.

"She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family,"
Proverbs 31:15

As long as I can remember, Mama has been getting up before the break of day to prepare for her family.  Laundry.  Breakfast.  Lunches. And most days, you could find a hand-written note in those lunch bags.  A special treat to remind you how much she loved you.

"She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks."
Proverbs 31:17

Don't let the tiny frame fool you.  She is a strong lady.  She works hard at all she does.  From a 40+ year nursing career to yard work to house work, you name it, she does it all and does it exceptionally well.

"She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come."
Proverbs 31: 25

It is a said that a person's history shapes their future.  Lucky for me and my sister, Mama's strength defined her future.  She found her strength in her faith in Jesus.  She is dignified and classy and elegant.  She is beautiful.  And she can laugh at the days ahead, because she knows Who holds her future.

"She speaks with wisdom, and
faithful instruction is on her tongue."
Proverbs 31:26

Mama listens.  With her whole heart.  And she prays.  With you.  Over you.  For you.  And when the time is right, she offers wise advice.  I have always valued my mama's opinion....above all the others.  Because I know her opinion is shaped by seeking counsel from God.

"She watches over the affairs of her household,"
Proverbs 31:27

Mama has always put her family first.  Always.  Diddy, my sister and me were always her first priority.  Still are.  She sacrifices her wants for our needs.

"Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her"
Proverbs 31:28

Yes, I would say my sister and I are blessed.  Beyond measure.  For we were raised by a mama of noble character.  A mama who set the standard.  A mama who I want to be like each and every day.

"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised."
Proverbs 31:30

Mama always says 'pretty is as pretty does'.  It is because of her actions that she is beautiful.  From the inside, out.  It is because of her relationship with Jesus that she is beautiful.  He shines through her.  Everyday.

"Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate."
Proverbs 31:31

I honor my mama.  Not just on Mother's Day, but every single day. Because she is who molded me into the person I am today.  Perhaps this mama thing got a hold of me because my mama showed me how to do it.  And she did it well.  Oh, so well!

Happy Mother's Day, Mama!  I praise Him for a Mama like you!
